Ten of the Top 25 in the World, Major Champions Among Early Player Commitments

PGA TOUR returns to Charlotte May 1-7

Charlotte NC, March 21, 2023— Today tournament officials announced a collection of player commitments that includes ten of the top 25 players in the world, past champions, major champions, and rising stars who will compete in the Wells Fargo Championship May 1-7, 2023, at Quail Hollow Club.

Max Homa will defend his 2022 title and seek to match Rory McIlroy’s tournament-record three victories at the springtime PGA TOUR stop. He will be joined by Lucas Glover and Brian Harman, as past champions currently in the field.

World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay, the 2021 FedExCup Champion, leads a group of players among the top 25 in the world who have committed. They include (No. 6) Homa, (No. 7) Xander Schauffele, (No. 8) Will Zalatoris, (No. 12) Tony Finau, (No. 15) Sam Burns, (No. 16) Cameron Young, (No. 20) Hideki Matsuyama, (No. 22) Kurt Kitayama, and (No. 23) Shane Lowry.

Charlotte resident and 2012 U.S, Open champion Webb Simpson, who also won THE PLAYERS in 2018, is part of a group of players who have won major championships through the years. Other U.S. Open champions currently in the field are Lucas Glover (2009) and Gary Woodland (2019). Masters champions currently in the field are Matsuyama (2021), Adam Scott (2013), and Danny Willett (2016). Francesco Molinari and Lowry were back-to-back Open Championship winners in 2018 and 2019.

Eight of these players competed at Quail Hollow Club in the 2022 Presidents Cup. On the U.S team were Burns, Cantlay, Finau, Homa, Schauffele and Young. Competing for the International team were Matsuyama and Scott.

As a group these players have accumulated 73 career PGA TOUR victories. Scott leads with 14 wins. Cantlay and Matsuyama each have eight.

The Wells Fargo Championship is one of the premier golf events on the PGA TOUR. Since 2003, the tournament has welcomed all the world’s top 25 players and in 2019 was voted by the players as “Best in Class” among events on the TOUR schedule.

Seven of the tournament’s 16 champions have earned major championship titles and four champions have held the No.1 spot on the Official World Golf Rankings since the tournament’s inception in 2003.
