Round 3 Interview With:

Sergio Garcia

Saturday May 4, 2019

Q. (In progress) on the front nine there to shoot 30 on that first nine. How did you get it going, get the round jump started there right out of the gate?

SERGIO GARCIA:Yeah, I played very nicely. Obviously drove the ball well, made a nice putt on 2 to start with, probably like a 30 footer right to left, big curler. Then hit it close on 3, hit it very close on 4, had another good chance at 5. Then hit it close again on 7, 8 and 9 and I was able to make 7 and 9. So it was obviously a perfect front nine to start the day. Gave myself some good looks on the back nine, unfortunately didn't make as many, but I'm very happy with the overall score.

Q. Fantastic up and down out of the bunker there on 18 and the adulation from the fans, the applause. What does it mean to you to come back for the first time since 2013 and be a part of this field and play so well on a Saturday at Quail Hollow Club?

SERGIO GARCIA:Yeah, it's obviously nice. Unfortunately I haven't been able to come here for a while because of scheduling, but it's nice to be back and nice to play like I did the first day and today. Yesterday was a little bit more of a fighting kind of round.

You know, very happy with that, and hopefully we have another one of those tomorrow and see what happens.

Q. Sergio, let's start with, boy, that was a fabulous round of golf.

SERGIO GARCIA:Thank you, thanks. It's nice when things go like that and you start hitting good shots and rolling some putts in here and there and make a couple good saves at the right times, too.

Q. Virtually every shot you've hit this week has been on PGA TOUR Live, so we've gotten to see the good, we've gotten to see the struggle, we've gotten to see a man working hard yesterday. How does it feel to go from that to this?

SERGIO GARCIA:Yeah, no, I mean, I think like you said, the first day I played really well. I probably shot probably at least two or three shots worse than I should have. Yesterday, yeah, it was a mixed bag of some really good holes and three or four bad swings that cost me a lot. Like you said, I fought hard. Very easily I could have kind of put my shoulders down. I fought as hard as I could to make sure I was here on the weekend and then anything can happen on the weekend. Go out there today and played very nicely, shot 6 under and we're kind of in the tournament again.

Q. It looks to me like you're really into the process of whether it's a pre shot routine or whatever it is, it looks deliberate, it looks intentional.

SERGIO GARCIA:Yes, you know, obviously I'm trying to tell myself the right things when I go into every one of my shots. Unfortunately it doesn't work every single time, but you know how this is. Yeah, it's important for me to kind of get a couple things in my head right, and if I can manage to do that and just be aggressive with my swings pretty much, that's what I need to do. Sometimes when I struggle I get a little bit tentative and then my transition is not as good as it should be.

So it was nice to be able to do a lot of good things today and I've got to try to do more of the same tomorrow.

Q. Sergio, great round today. Just a few comments on some of the highlights.

SERGIO GARCIA:Yeah, no, it was a great day. The conditions were very nice like they've been all week, but still a tough golf course. There's a lot of shots that you have to hit right and a lot of good tee shots and stuff like that. I was able to do that for the most part all day, which was nice.

You know, got off to a great start with three birdies from 2 to 4 and some other good looks, then birdied 7 and 9 to shoot 30 on the front. Then on the back I felt like, you know, I felt like I still played quite well, gave myself some good opportunities. Unfortunately they just didn't drop as well as they did on the front, but overall it was a nice day.

Q. You said you felt like you've been playing better than the scores reflected a little bit before this week. Did you come into the week feeling like your game was where you wanted it to be?

SERGIO GARCIA:Well, obviously Tommy Fleetwood and myself, we had a great week last week, that's always nice. Even though we didn't win, to finish second there and play the way we played, that was obviously a confidence booster. When I came here, yeah, I felt pretty good with my game. I felt like first round I played really, really well. I probably shot two or three shots worse than I should have on that 2 under par. Second round was a tiny bit more of a struggle, a little bit more fighting trying to make sure that I was here for the weekend, and today was a lot of good drives, a lot of good iron shots and a lot of good putts.

Q. How many shots do you think you have to be within starting tomorrow to have a chance?

SERGIO GARCIA:You never know, but to be realistic I would say probably three or four. Anything more than that and also depends on how many guys are in front. If there's one guy, then you can kind of make it up. If there's three or four guys or four guys, it's tougher because it's very difficult for me to play really well again and then and all of them play not too good.

But we'll see. You know, it doesn't really matter. At the end of the day I think that it was nice to shoot this kind of round to put myself with at least kind of a chance and we'll see what happens.
