Round 2 Interview With:

Rory McIlroy

Friday May 3, 2019

Q. Rory, probably not the finish you were looking for, but you must be pleased with the position you put yourself overall going into the weekend?

RORY McILROY: Yeah, obviously disappointing finish. Played some really good stuff today. I probably played better today than I did yesterday in terms of how I hit it off the tee ball striking wise. It's a funny game. I stood up here last night talking about that I got the most out of it yesterday and today it was the complete opposite. You know, I turned a 66 into a 70. Golf, it's a funny game and these things happen. But yeah, still right there going into the weekend. Just need to try and shake off that bad start sorry, bad finish today and get off to a good start tomorrow.

Q. (Question about the golf course.)

RORY McILROY: I think over the years they've obviously lengthened it and you're sort of wearing out your 6 and 7 irons, which is not really the case for a lot of other golf courses, for me anyway. So you're hitting a lot of mid irons in. And I think the one thing especially this week that's become so tough is the greens are so firm. The greens are really, really firm. I guess it's hard because for how firm they are, they're not overly fast. So if you start missing greens, it can make it a little bit tricky in terms of you've got to judge that first bounce as it's going to bounce, but then once it starts to roll, it's not really going to get away from you. So I find it a little tricky to judge some of the chip shots around the greens. Yeah, it's playing tricky and the wind's getting up a little bit this afternoon, which will make it even more challenging.

Q. So what you're doing early in a round doesn't necessarily give you a whole lot of intel about how the course is going to play later in the round?

RORY McILROY: Yeah, I think so. I think the course is definitely going to play a little bit differently from when we teed off at 7:40 this morning to the guys teeing off now at nearly 1:00. It's still warm, it's clear, there's a bit of wind. The course will just continue to dry out as the day goes on.

Q. Rory, what worked for your driver today?

RORY McILROY: Just a little more comfortable over it. Maybe not trying to you know, the feelings that I have with my irons, I feel like I can exaggerate them a little bit more because it's a shorter golf club, but with a driver, you know, I still just have to be comfortable with it because even when I don't feel like I'm swinging at my best, the driver's still a good club in the bag. So just being a little bit more relaxed with that, not trying to be too perfect with the driver on the way back. I was a little more comfortable with it today for sure.

Q. (No microphone.)

RORY McILROY: 7 iron.

Q. What about 3 if you don't mind me asking?

RORY McILROY: Pitching wedge.
