April 21, 2009Phil Mickelson, Trevor Immelman Latest Top-Ranked Players to Commit
Currently 9 of the top 14 in the World Coming to Charlotte
Charlotte, NC—World No. 2 Phil Mickelson and 2008 Masters Champion Trevor Immelman are the latest top-ranked players from the Official World Golf Rankings to commit to play in the Wells Fargo Championship scheduled less than a week from now.
Mickelson, a two-time winner on the PGA TOUR this year, will be making his sixth start at the Wells Fargo Championship. He has finished among the top ten three times since his first start in 2004, when he was tied for fifth. In 2005, he was tied for 7th and tied for third in 2007.
Mickelson is the only multiple winner on the PGA TOUR so far this year, with victories at the Northern Trust Open and the World Golf Championships-CA Championship.
Immelman's best finish at the Wells Fargo Championship was second in 2006, when he lost a playoff to Jim Furyk. Immelman's commitment means the last three winners of the Masters are all coming to Charlotte. Earlier this week, 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson joined the field. Angel Cabrera, who won in Augusta over a week ago, is also committed to play.
The other players currently ranked among the top 15 in the world who are committed: Sergio Garcia (No.3), Padraig Harrington (No.6), 2005 champion Vijay Singh (No.8), Camilo Villegas (No.10), Robert Karlsson (No.11), Steve Stricker (No.12), 2008 champion Anthony Kim (No.13) and 2006 champion Jim Furyk (No.14).
Also, there are 44 players currently in the field who have won PGA TOUR titles in the past two years.
Players have until Friday, April 24 to commit to the tournament.
