June 04, 2008 The Wells Fargo Championship and Compass Group Partner for Food Donation
CHARLOTTE, NC—Second Harvest's Community Food Rescue program was the recipient of 14,672 pounds of perishable food items after the closing of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club last month.
The donation, the largest to date since the event's inception, was provided by the Wells Fargo Championship and Levy Restaurants—a division of Charlotte-based Compass Group North America. Levy Restaurants was founded in Chicago in 1978 and is recognized as one of America's fastest growing and most critically acclaimed restaurant companies, and is the leader in premium sports and entertainment dining concessions.
"One of the core goals of the Wells Fargo Championship is to find outlets we can extend assistance to using any extra items we may have once the tournament week is concluded," said Wells Fargo Championship Executive Director Kym Hougham. "We are grateful to have a partnership with Levy Restaurants and Compass Group North America, who share the same values as us to reach out to those in need."
"We're pleased to do this as we are committed to helping the city of Charlotte with food donations from our large-scale events. A partnership with a client like the Wells Fargo Championship enables us to do it each year", states Kurt Kimball, Compass Group's Executive Vice President of Sales. To date, 26,606 pounds of perishables from the event has been donated since 2004.
It comes at a critical time. Second Harvest of Metrolina's partner agencies are reporting increases of 25% to 40% in demand across the Charlotte region, compared to the same time last year.
"With added demand, coupled with higher gas prices that directly impact our operations, we're grateful to receive this donation. Summertime is traditionally a quieter time for donations, so this really helps our agencies direct food to the people who need it," explains Kay Carter, executive director of Second Harvest of Metrolina.
