Wells Fargo Championship Powered with Ultra-Low-Emission Turbines

Clean & green turbines power hospitality tent and Charlotte-manufactured shuttle buses

CHARLOTTE, NC-The 2008 Wells Fargo Championship will be clean and green on and off the fairways.

fThe Championship, held April 28 – May 4 in Charlotte, is using ultra-low emission, environmentally friendly power turbines to supply electricity for air conditioning, lights, sound systems and catering operations at the hospitality tent near the practice range at Quail Hollow Club.

The two turbines, manufactured by Capstone Turbine Corporation in California, are green energy systems that reduce the amount of fuel consumed compared to traditional energy solutions. They also emit less smog-forming NOx, and greenhouse-gas emissions associated with global climate change.

In addition, clean Capstone turbines are onboard two hybrid-electric buses among the fleet transporting spectators to and from parking lots. When equipped with Capstone turbines, the ECOSaver IV buses, manufactured by DesignLine International of Charlotte, have experienced up to a 100-percent improvement in fuel economy over traditional diesel buses, which equates to fuel savings of up to 6,000 gallons per year, according to DesignLine. The buses also are quieter than standard buses.

The emissions from Capstone turbines meet extremely low global emission requirements, including California’s stringent distributed-generation emissions standard.  Since each turbine has only one moving part and uses no fluids, it requires very low maintenance.

“The Wells Fargo Championship and our title sponsor, Wachovia Corp., are extremely interested in exploring opportunities that reduce our environmental impact,” said Kym Hougham, executive director, Wells Fargo Championship. “When our generator supplier suggested we consider using these low-emission turbines, the answer was easy. I expect we’ll continue to expand this program in coming years because of the environmental benefits.”

Two Capstone C30 turbines will provide a combined 60-kilowatts of power to the practice range hospitality tent. That’s enough power to illuminate 600 100-watt light bulbs every hour. Each shuttle bus also contains a C30 turbine.

“More than 4,000 Capstone Turbines have been shipped worldwide,” said Darren Jamison, Capstone President and CEO. “Not only are the turbines clean and green, they require very little maintenance because of our patented air-bearing technology. In short, our turbines help the environment while saving users time and money.”

In 2006, Wachovia announced a comprehensive environmental strategy encompassing commitments in the areas of forest protection and climate change. The company also adopted the Equator Principles, a voluntary set of guidelines for managing environmental and social issues in project finance.

In 2007, Wachovia:

  • invested $700 million in wind farm development. Wachovia also is pursuing other renewable energy source investment opportunities including geothermal and solar;
  • recycled more than 23,000 tons of paper; and
  • launched the PaperLess internal initiative to reduce paper consumption across the company 20 percent by the end of 2008.
