Volunteers will work out of the ambassador trailer, located near the driving range. They will have varied tasks, from helping with Wells Fargo Championship University (Ambassador Orientation) to helping out wherever needed, to ensure a successful tournament.
Assignments will vary and will be at both on- and off-site locations. Volunteers are needed Saturday prior to tournament through tournament Sunday. There are two shifts daily to staff with volunteers. One shift must be a tournament day—Thursday through Sunday.
Featured Story: Joey Egan 2006
Joey Egan describes himself as a big golf fan and someone who loves the city of Charlotte. He describes volunteering for the Wells Fargo Championship as "a great way to get involved in golf other than just playing."
In 2004, he volunteered with the Scoreboard/Scoring Assist. committee and he enjoyed working with the Master Scoreboard. It was during that ambassadorship that Egan met Paula Burnett and expressed his interest in learning as much as possible about the behind the scenes activities of PGA TOUR events.
"Eventually, I would like to have a golf career," says Egan. Being a Paula's Pool Ambassador is a great start. Charged with managing Wells Fargo Championship University (also known as Ambassador Orientation), filling in volunteer gaps and completing special projects, no other Ambassador group has quite the gamut of activities.
Paula's Pool consists of about 66 to 70 volunteers who manage everything from crowd control, shift coverage, urgent tournament issues, and the entire group of 2,500 volunteers for the Wells Fargo Championship. When asked how he prepares, Egan states "You can't really prepare. It's more of an attitude or willingness to help out whenever necessary to ensure that the tournament runs as smoothly as it can."
This committee is fast paced. "Things can change at the drop of the hat, so we have to be the jack of all trades. Where needed we are ready for hire." At the height of the tournament, everyone is helped by Paula's Pool in some capacity-the fans, the players and other volunteers.
In addition to being a big golf fan, Egan continuously returns to Paula's Pool for one main reason - Paula. "Paula is a great lady and always has a smile on her face. We want to make sure she is successful, so the tournament is successful."
