CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ninety minutes after he cracked some self-deprecating jokes about his celebrated donut binge the morning after the Masters, and mentioned how he eschews certain foods during tournament weeks, the dietary gods seemingly exacted their cruel revenge.
Mickelson, making his first start since winning for the third time at Augusta National, had to withdraw from the pro-am of the Wells Fargo Championship after catching a stomach bug.
He quit after nine holes.
Mickelson seemed fine during his noon press session, but reportedly had experienced stomach distress the night before in his hotel room, his publicist said. He was treated by PGA Tour medical personnel for dehydration and was considering making a trip to a local hospital.
Mickelson is expected to play in Thursday's opening round and has a 12:50 p.m. tee time.
In March of last season, Mickelson spent the eve of the final round at the CA Championship with a nasty stomach bug and somehow held on to win, guzzling a half-dozen sports drinks at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa.
Earlier Wednesday, Mickelson told the humorous story of how his photograph came to be snapped at the drive-through window -- wearing his Augusta National green jacket -- the day after the Masters win.
"Well, throughout the week I don't eat a lot of sugar or carbs or what have you, and my kids wanted doughnuts, and I said Monday morning we'll go to Krispy Kreme and grab some," Mickelson explained. "We used to do that in San Diego on football Sunday; we'd go grab some doughnuts Sunday before the [Chargers] games.
"But Krispy Kreme went out of business in San Diego. We don't have them over there anymore. That was their big thing. They wanted to go Monday morning, so I promised them Monday morning we would. It was a little chilly, so I threw on a jacket and went through the drive‑through."
