Enotes for August 18

  • It is interesting to note that No. 1 in the world Tiger Woods and No. 2 in the world Phil Mickelson have competed in the same tournaments seven times this year. Two of those events were not a major championship or World Golf Championship competition—the Wells Fargo Championship and the Memorial Tournament.
  • PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer finished tied for 11th in the 2009 Wells Fargo Championship—his only appearance in Charlotte.
        • Rory McIlroy has recorded two course records (no ties) so far this season. His final round 62 at Quail Hollow Club was his first and his opening-round 63 at St. Andrews during the British Open was his second. Taking this a step further, the last player to record two tournament records (no ties) in the same season was 2008 champion Anthony Kim, who broke the course record during his victory here and did so a few weeks later upon winning the AT& T National at Congressional.
        • The par-three 17th at Quail Hollow Club is a favorite among many spectators, who have seen a lot of tee shots go into the lake bordering a good portion of the green. In fact, 36 tee shots found water this year, bringing the total to 284 since the tournament began in 2003.
        • Five players in their 20s have now won three or more titles on the PGA TOUR. Two of those are champions here—Anthony Kim (2008) and Sean O’Hair (2009).
        • Quoted: Just the fact that you've never been in contention coming down the stretch in the back nine in a major make any difference at all this weekend? What do you have to do for the first three and a half days to get your self in that position? What's the key?
RORY MCILROY: Patience, I think. That's the hardest part is getting yourself into the position and then if you look at the win that I had this year at Quail Hollow, I held off Phil Mickelson and Cabrera down the stretch, who are two major champions. So if I can do that on a golf course like Quail Hollow, then there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to do it here.
